Finding your puppy

Breeders, they arent all equal.

Dog shows provide an opportunity for breeders to showcase their dogs, visiting a show can be a good way to meet breeders and see their dogs in person.

At a dog show, you can watch the dogs being judged and talk to breeders about their breeding program and their dogs. You can also get an idea of the breed standard and see how different dogs compare to it.

Not all breeders participate in dog shows for a multitude of reasons However if they choose not to show in conformation then they should be trialling their dog in another discipline whether it be scent work, obedience, waterwork or rally to show t

It's still important to do your research and ask questions to ensure that you are dealing with a responsible breeder who is committed to breeding healthy, breed-typical dogs.

It's worth noting that dog shows can be very busy for dogs and owners alike, so be sure to ask the breeder if they have a minute to talk and always ask for permission before petting or interacting with any dog.

Shows are listed in the event section of Dogzonline and on each othe state's websiteses and the Newfoundland clubs can often tell you what upcoming shows are likely to have them entered

Breeders, they arent all equal.

Going to an Australian National Kennel Club (ANKC) registered and ethical breeder can have many benefits, including:

  1. Health and temperament: ANKC registered and ethical breeders are required to follow strict breeding standards and practices to ensure that their puppies are healthy, well-socialized, and free from genetic defects or hereditary diseases.
  2. Quality assurance: ANKC registered breeders are held to high standards of excellence and are required to maintain accurate records and follow specific guidelines for breeding, raising, and caring for their dogs.
  3. Support and guidance: ANKC registered breeders are often a great resource for support and guidance throughout the life of your dog. They can offer advice on training, nutrition, and health care, as well as provide information about the breed's history, traits, and characteristics.
  4. Avoiding puppy mills: By going to an ANKC registered and ethical breeder, you can help support responsible breeding practices and avoid contributing to the puppy mill industry, which is known for producing dogs in cruel and unhealthy conditions.

Overall, going to an ANKC registered and ethical breeder can help ensure that you are getting a healthy, well-bred puppy that will make a great companion for years to come.

Purebred vs Crossbred

Temperament

A purebred Newfoundland will have predictable physical and behavioural traits, as they have been bred for generations specifically for that temprament. A crossbred Newfoundland, on the other hand, may have a wider range of physical and behavioural traits, making it more difficult to predict their needs and temperament.

Health

Purebred Newfoundlands may be prone to certain genetic health issues, However, responsible breeders will do health testing and select breeding pairs to minimize genetic health issues. A crossbred Newfoundland will also risk developing any of the genetic issues from the other breeds used to make them up with little research into how the multiple breeds will grow.

Coat

The Newfoundland coat is very different to most and crossing it with dogs that don't shed, ie Poodles etc can create a coat that's a groomers nightmare. The natural oil in the Newfoundland coat combined with those sorts of coats can quickly end up in matting and needing to be clipped off. to keep them at a reasonable length they will require more regular and thorough grooming compared to a purebred Newfoundland

Consistency

A crossbred Newfoundland will have a wider range of physical and behavioural traits, which will make it more difficult to find a dog with the specific traits you are looking for, often the difference in traits will only show up when your dog is grown.

If you are attracted to a Newfoundland for a specific physical or behavioural trait a Newfoundland from an ethical, registered breeder is the only way to go.
